Pip the Penguin: A Marketing Parable
Expio2025-03-28T20:17:45+00:00Meet Pip.
Pip felt lost in the noise of a chaotic penguin colony. All the constant squawking sounded the same, and Pip could barely understand any of it. Pip didn’t like squawking, but he went along with it. That’s what everyone else was doing. But he could never be heard.
Pip knew he had a different song to sing. One day, while all the other penguins were going through their daily routine of meaningless squawking, Pip went to a quiet corner of the ice to think about what he wanted to say and how to say it. He looked out over the frozen sea, and realized having a voice wasn’t just about being heard. It was about connection, sharing and bringing penguins together who shared his values and fit with his world view the penguins who most benefited from his song. But how could Pip be heard over so much noise?
Pip had always tried to sound like all the other penguins. But when he was alone in his secret cave, he sang a different song, a sound that was his own. Pip knew what he had to do. With clarity and courage, Pip turned from the edge of the cliff and looked at the squawking fray, still squawking away in the same shrill squawky way. Pip cleared his throat and closed his eyes as he sang in his authentic voice for the very first time. Pip’s song managed to cut through the squawking, finding other penguins who resonated with his song and voice. These penguins also had their own songs to sing. They waddled over to Pip to join in.
